 Week 1

Welcome back! We hope you have had a wonderful break and got plenty of rest and relaxation along the way. We are looking forward to seeing your tamariki tomorrow in their winter uniforms and hearing all about their holidays.

Welcome to our new families joining St. Mary’s. We are looking forward to getting to know your tamariki and developing relationships with them and yourselves. There are lots of new friends to make that will be starting school on the same day and I’m sure there are children they may already know in our kakano space.

Three Way Conferences

These are happening on Tuesday 10th & Wednesday 11th after school - this is in week 2. Please ensure you book a time to come, with your child, to discuss their progress and their next learning steps. Thank you to those parents who have already made a booking.

You can still make bookings by doing one of the following:

1) Go to the School App and then the Links section then School Interviews. Enter the code akwma

2)  Go to www.school interviews.co.nz and enter the event code akwma

Library

The library is one of the many rooms in the school that was recarpeted during the holidays. The contractors were on a tight time schedule to get the carpeting done. As a result, the library will be closed until it is able to be reset.  Library days are likely to be affected - we will keep you updated throughout the week.

Holiday Reading Logs

Bring these back to school this week to help your class go in the draw to win pizza and chips for lunch. The classes with the most reading logs returned are eligible to go in the draw. Remember - if mum/dad/aunty/grandpa etc have read you a book during the holidays, this counts as one of your entries. If you have lost your reading log, write down on a piece of paper what you have read or what has been read to you. PLEASE make sure that your NAME and CLASS are written on your reading log.

Reminders / Changes

  • School starts at 8.45 am for all students. There will not be staff at the gates in the morning and students will be permitted to come into school as they arrive. We do ask that you drop your child off at a reasonable time.

  • School finishes at 3.00 pm for all students except bus students who will leave their classrooms at 2.50 pm.

  • Students are to sanitise their hands as they come through the school gates

  • If your child is late to school they must report to the office before they go to class.

  • If your child needs to isolate because they have Covid they must isolate for 7 days, effectively 5 days of school. There will no longer be a Home Learning programme offered to students who are absent. Children should just focus on getting well.

  • Winter uniform is to be worn. We do appreciate that some uniform items are unavailable at the moment.

Week 11 Blog

 Kia Ora!

Wow, we have come to the end of the term. Our last school day is Thursday.  We have managed to fit in a lot of learning and fun despite the rough start of Covid, lets hope the next three terms have less interruptions.

We continue to be safe in and around our classroom to ensure everyone feels comfortable every day in Kākano.

Please remember if your child is unwell they need to stay at home.

Holy Week

Today marks the start of Holy Week.  With today being Palm Sunday.  We will continue to learn about the events that take place during this week.  We have a Liturgy on Thursday that we will attend in our classes.

There are Masses taking place this week and next weekend. Unfortunately, we still cannot attend Mass as a school, it would be great to see families attend Mass together.

Big picture

After the holidays, children are expected to be in their winter uniforms. Please note that boys can now wear long sleeve polo shirts instead of the skivvy. Our uniform hours are Monday and Friday from 8.30 to 9.00 am and Wednesdays from 2.30 pm to 3.00 pm. You can purchase uniforms online by going to the school website. Once the online order has been put together, you will be able to pick up your uniform from the School Office.

 Week 10

Kia ora whānau

There are only two more weeks left of this school term and it is so great to see nearly all of our students and staff at school and well! We continue to be safe in and around our classroom to ensure everyone feels comfortable every day in Kākano.

Easter

We have some special learning happening for the children to help them prepare for Holy Week next week. Firstly they will be told the Palm Sunday story and we will have a sort of donkey parade to celebrate this. We will also be talking about The Last Supper, the Washing of the Feet and the Stations of the Cross over this time.

It is important to teach all of our tamariki about what the week leading up to Easter Sunday is really about. This video could be very helpful to show your children and help you remember what the HOLY WEEK is about and why it is important that we recognise and celebrate the days leading up to Easter Sunday.

Week 9 Blog

 Week 9

Kia ora whānau

It is week 9 this week and we continue to be impressed with the way the children are working across all Kākano classes.

It has been pleasing to see many children return to school after periods of illness or isolation.  As always, we remind you if your child is displaying any cough or cold symptoms you keep them at home and test for Covid.

In class we continue to…

  • Keep our space well ventilated with open windows and doors

  • Clean hard surfaces throughout the day

  • Remind children to sanitise as they enter the classroom

Homework

Each day your child brings home an activity to do with your support.  You will find a description of the activity in your child’s Home book.  The activity aims to support the classroom learning your child has done that day and should take no longer than 15 minutes.

We thank all the whānau who take the time to share in their child’s learning.  We have noticed a remarkable difference with those children who are regularly completing home activities.

If you have any questions about work that is being sent home, please contact your classroom teacher.

Swimming

Kākano 4, 5, 6 and 7 are swimming this week.  Please bring your togs every day.  The pool is heated so all children will be able to swim.

Gym

Mondays at lunchtime if your child wishes to attend. Girls bring shorts and a t-shirt. Boys can come in their uniform - you can bring shorts and t-shirts if you wish.

Fridays at lunchtime if your child wishes to attend. Bring your own skates and helmets.

The week ahead:

Monday - normal school day

Tuesday - normal school day

Week 8 Blog

 Week 8

Kia Ora Kākano whānau

Wow, Week 8 already! The term seems like it’s flying by.

We would like to thank parents for their continued support of the school’s Covid protocols. It looks like a wet week so we would again like to remind you that on a wet day, we ask all parents to stay on the outside of the Kākano gates as we have lots of children to get to set areas. Once again, if your child tests positive it is very important to let either Dave, Anne, your child's teacher or the school office know.  Thanks for all your help with this. Also a  big thumbs up to those children and whanau who are working hard on the Home Learning activities.

Many of you will notice some differences to the reading coming home and should receive an information sheet/email about the changes. Please check their book bags and home books for any activities we have sent home.  It is an exciting time for the Kakano teachers as we move into the next phase of our structured literacy programme.

Week 7 Sunday Blog

 Week 7

Kia Ora Kākano whānau

Thanks so much for helping the Young Vinnies raise $522.90 from all the donations towards helping people in the Ukraine. It was wonderful to see so many of our children dressed in yellow and blue.

Covid is continuing to make its presence in our school.  We have children and staff who are at home isolating.  It is really important for us to continue to keep up our Covid protocols so we ask that no parents come inside the Kākano classrooms and continue to drop your children off at the gates. On a wet day, we ask all parents to stay on the outside of the Kākano gates as we have lots of children to get to set areas to meet parents.  We continue to keep our classrooms well ventilated, surfaces washed down and have children sanitising.

If your child tests positive it is very important to let either Dave, Anne, your child's teacher or the school office know.  Thanks for all your help with this.

Friday Worry Dolls

With all that is going on in New Zealand and around the world at the moment Kakano 3 made Worry Dolls on Friday. These originated in Guatemala and the idea is that you tell the doll your worries and place them under your pillow before you go to bed. The children had a great time and are keen to make 'accessories' for them during play provocation time in the mornings this week. Check out our dolls below.
